We offer a wide variety of training educational opportunities to those interested to master aspects of the field of radiotherapy.
The residency program
Our department of Radiation Oncology of the UMC Groningen, chaired by prof. J.A. Langendijk, has a certified residency program for medical residents specializing in radiation-oncology. The residency program has a nominal duration of five years. This may be shortened, depending on the development and learning curve of the resident. The residency has a four-year minimal duration. Our aim is for our residents to complete the training in four and a half years. On average we accept two new residents each year, for a total of ten in-house residents.
As a resident you work closely together with the other residents and with the radiation-oncologists of each of the different focus areas. Under the supervision of a radiation-oncologist, you will be responsible for your own patients. You will become increasingly independent regarding patient intake, establishing the indication for treatment, preparing the radiation treatment and the weekly consults with the patients.
We offer the opportunity of a part-time residency. To ensure sufficient exposure to patient care, the part-time appointment shall be 80% or more of a full-time appointment. We have an active collaboration with the ‘Radiotherapeutisch Instituut Friesland (RIF)’ where you will spend one year of your residency. We also offer residents of other residency programs the opportunity to complete a part of your training at our department.
Residency program outline
The residency is a combination of the different topics mentioned below. Each resident writes an individual training plan, covering the time spent on each of the topics and the specifics to be covered during this time.
This part is competency-oriented and consists of internships in each of the focus areas. A focus area is a group of patients with a common cancer indication. You will work closely together with the supervising radiation-oncologist. During the internship you will become more and more independent at performing the required tasks. This topic also covers the cursory-education program which consists of independent study as well as classroom teaching, for a total of one day per two weeks.
Internships in internal medicine and radiology
It is mandatory to complete a four-month internship at the UMCG department of medical oncology (or surgical oncology) and a three-month internship at the UMCG radiology department.
Topic of choice and deeper understanding
Each resident can choose a topic of choice covering a six-month period. Most often this period is used for scientific research. The allotted time can, however, also be spent on a so-called ‘in depth profile’ aimed at a deep understanding of a specific topic, such as: education, management, proton therapy or another clinical theme. The resident determines the most suitable combination of profiles, of which only proton therapy is a mandatory choice.
Master clinical rotations
The UMCG department of radiation-oncology is actively involved in the educational program of the faculty of medical sciences of the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen. On a six-week rotational schedule, groups of three early-stage master’s students complete a brief internship at our department. Communicational aspects are the main focus of these internships, but you will also be exposed to important aspects in the fields of radiotherapy and oncology.
We furthermore offer later-stage master’s students the opportunity of a 6 to 14 week internship. The contents and responsibilities are determined on a per-student basis.

Master research projects
The master’s degree is obtained by completing a graduation project. We typically have several suitable research projects available. An overview of these projects can be found on the Junior Scientific Masterclass website.
